Business Services VET

Business Services is offered as a 2 Unit course in Year 11 and in Year 12.

Course Description

NOTE: This is a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course and the following information MUST be read in conjunction with the information provided on ‘Vocational Education and Training’ on pages 99 and 100. 

Business Services is a dual-accreditation qualification. Successful completion of the course will earn students an Australian Qualifications Framework Certificate II in Business Services, in addition to completion of a HSC examination and contributing towards university entry.

Business Services is offered as a 2 Unit course in Year 11 and in Year 12. It is based on the National Training Package. The course is designed to provide students with appropriate learning opportunities that will enable them to acquire a range of technical, personal and interpersonal skills specifically related to business services but applicable to other service industries and careers. Business services focuses on sectors including, but not exclusive to management and administration; human resource management; sales marketing and advertising; and accounting and finance. 

Additionally, students who enrol in Business Services can select the Business Services Specialisation Course, an additional one-unit Category B course that examines independent project-based units relates to specialised areas of business activity. The additional unit is not examinable in the HSC.

Particular Course Requirements

  • Work placement is a mandatory requirement in Business Services. A minimum of 70 hours placement is required. Part time work may be counted towards work placement requirements.
  • As a VET course assessments are competency based and continuous. Assessment of competencies is standards referenced. A student’s performance is judged against a prescribed set of standards – not against the performance of other students. A student is judged either ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’.
  • Record of competencies successfully completed are recorded in an official student log book.
  • The HSC examination is independent of the competency based assessment procedures and has no impact on a student’s eligibility for AQF certificates. The HSC examination is a 2 hour written paper. Internal assessment in preparation for HSC purposes will consist of three internal examinations.
