VET Courses
Internal and External Vet Courses

Internal VET Courses
Newington currently offers three vocational courses on campus within the timetable:
External VET Courses
Newington offers external vocational courses to Year 11 and 12 boys in three ways:
- TAFE-delivered VET courses (TVET)
- School-based Traineeships/Apprenticeships
- By distance through OTEN (TAFE) TVET
These courses allow students in Years 11 and 12 to study selected TAFE vocational subjects while they are at school. TVET courses provide students with dual accreditation from the NESAs and TAFE. All TVET courses count towards the HSC BUT ONLY Industry Curriculum Framework courses count towards the ATAR calculation. Usually TVET courses are held on a Tuesday afternoon from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. Boys will miss classes that afternoon and must catch up on missed work. TVET courses carry the same requirements as normal school classes. Attendance is mandatory unless prior approval is given or in the case of illness. Most students studying TVET subjects do so through Sydney TAFE.
A full list of TVET courses offered by Sydney TAFE can be found at: www.sit.nsw.edu.au/tvet/ (follow links to TVET)
School-based Traineeships/Apprenticeships
These courses combine work and structured learning. They include paid work, a training agreement or indenture, and a formal training programme undertaken at TAFE. The formal training component provides up to 4 Units of HSC credit but does not count towards an ATAR. Usually boys attend TAFE on a Tuesday afternoon and work with their employer one full day each week. The remainder of the week is spent at school in normal classes. The workload is significant and there is a rigorous selection process involved, but an option for students with specific aspirations and goals.
OTEN
The distance education branch of TAFE, OTEN, offers a wide range of TVET subjects. Newington boys have utilised this option in the past when courses have not been on offer at TAFE or when there have been subject clashes. All teaching materials are provided by OTEN. For information about OTEN courses go to: www.oten.edu.au.
