Course Description<\/h2>\n

Year 11 (Preliminary) Course <\/strong>[Board Developed] 2 units
\nYear 12 (HSC) Course<\/strong> [Board Developed] 2 units<\/p>\n

The new Biology syllabus has been developed using the established NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabus development process. The syllabus includes Australian curriculum content and reflects the new directions of the Stronger HSC Standards reforms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(Students in ESL English may struggle with the literacy and language requirements of the Biology course.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Biology can be studied ON ITS OWN or alongside ONE or TWO other Science courses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Course Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Biology is the science of life.\u00a0<\/span>It concerns itself with\u202fthe ways in which living things interact with each other and the environment and how life has developed during the course of the\u202fEarth\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/span>Biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This course\u00a0<\/span>covers\u00a0<\/span>the rich<\/span>\u00a0diversity\u00a0<\/span>and interconnectedness\u00a0<\/span>of life\u00a0<\/span>while<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>exploring<\/span>\u00a0solutions to health and sustainability issues in a changing world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Areas of focus will\u00a0<\/span>include<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the role of<\/span>\u00a0photosynthesis and respiration<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ecological relationships in coastal\u00a0<\/span>habitats<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the application of\u00a0<\/span>bio<\/span>technologies to<\/span>\u00a0induce genetic change<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0the human body\u2019s immune response to\u00a0<\/span>infectious\u00a0<\/span>disease<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the r<\/span>ange of technologies used to control, prevent and treat non-infectious disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Students will study biological processes at\u00a0<\/span>small and large scales:\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>cells to\u00a0<\/span>rainforests<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The coursework involves, research, experimentation, modelling and\u00a0<\/span>case studies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The course builds on particular understandings, skills and attitudes that students have acquired during their K-10 Science course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    With sufficient effort and application over two years, students from classes 10A1 and A2 and the top half of all other classes should be able to\u202fmake a success of their studies in Biology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
