12 Ideas that Changed the World
An introduction to big philosophical ideas that have made us who we are. A Group B Elective.
This course provides a window in to various areas of philosophy, exploring the people, movements, events and ideas that have changed and shaped human cultures and societies. This course will challenge assumptions and provoke debate about identity, community, politics, psychology, technology, ethics and religion. This course will be a rigorous philosophical background for ideas that students will encounter across the curriculum. It will also be excellent preparation for senior IB and HSC studies in the humanities.
The course will ask questions of:
- Human Rights
- The Unconscious
- The Individual
- The Internet
Forms of Assessment
Students will choose how they are assessed over the course of the year from modes including:
- Socratic discussion
- Guided Inquiry
- Evaluative essay & viva voce
- Collaborative presentation
- Radio/TV documentary
