To Infinity and Beyond
An applied mathematics program. A Group B Elective.
Infinity is probably not what you think it is, in our world we don’t have anything else like it. Infinity is not a real number, it is an idea, an idea of something without an end that cannot be measured.
To Infinity and Beyond is a broad discovery based subject that builds on your understanding of mathematics to show you just how infinite life, and the concept of infinity, is to our everyday being.
This subject opens the window to provide you with a view into the world of espionage, global finance and code breaking (security). It investigates and puts you in the centre of solving some of the complex problems that are possible with applied mathematics.
Areas of study
- The concept of infinity
- Multiple infinities
- Set theory and patterns of infinity
- Patterns of infinite numbers, e.g. primes
- The history of primes
- The applications to codes, cyphers, internet security, intelligence and espionage, and business
Modes of Assessment
- Problem based scenarios
- A learning log (blog)
