{"id":110,"date":"2018-05-27T23:51:25","date_gmt":"2018-05-27T23:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/insites.newington.nsw.edu.au\/concordiagallery\/?p=110"},"modified":"2018-05-28T01:12:08","modified_gmt":"2018-05-28T01:12:08","slug":"reflective-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insites.newington.nsw.edu.au\/concordiagallery\/2018\/05\/27\/reflective-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflective Spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Officially opened on Tuesday, 8\u00a0September, Concordia Gallery hosted\u00a0Reflective Spaces, an exhibition of the\u00a0seven Year 12 International\u00a0Baccalaureate (IB) student\u2019s final works.\u00a0Over the course of two years each artist\u00a0developed a theme that was reflective of\u00a0his own personal interests, cultural\u00a0background and societal vision. The\u00a0works included a wide range of media\u00a0from Photography and Film,\u00a0Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and\u00a0Printmaking. Each of the seven\u00a0reflective spaces told the audience a\u00a0uniquely crafted story of each\u00a0individual artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">IB Visual Arts teacher Ms Marina\u00a0Hinves was responsible for\u00a0supporting the boys on their artmaking\u00a0journey and was grateful for\u00a0the opportunity to get to work with\u00a0and know each of the boys. She said,\u00a0\u201cAs a teacher I think that one of the\u00a0most important things is to see them\u00a0fly. At the beginning of the IB course\u00a0many of them don&#8217;t know how and\u00a0where to start. My job is not to make\u00a0things happen, but to teach them how to\u00a0do it themselves. This exhibition truly\u00a0reflects on their ability to fly, and to\u00a0some extent my ability to show them the\u00a0way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">At the exhibition Ms Hinves invited\u00a0each of the boys to speak about his own\u00a0personal experience which culminated in\u00a0the exhibition. Year 12 Felix Shannon\u00a0said, \u201cWe have been able to cast\u00a0ourselves across multiple canvases,\u00a0multiple visions, and that\u2019s something\u00a0this course has really allowed us to do,\u00a0allowed us to spread our wings and fly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The boys all expressed their great\u00a0gratitude for the support and guidance\u00a0that they received from the Visual Arts\u00a0staff at Newington, especially Ms Hinves\u00a0who encouraged them to learn and grow.\u00a0Year 12 student Jake Holden said,\u00a0\u201cBefore Year 11 I didn\u2019t actually do VA\u00a0since Year 8, so coming into the\u00a0classroom with people who had done it\u00a0for the past few years I was expecting to\u00a0be way behind everyone. But the whole\u00a0class, especially Ms Hinves and all the\u00a0other boys were extremely supportive\u2026The whole class has helped each other\u00a0throughout the process and it\u2019s\u00a0something that\u2019s been incredible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Congratulations to Samuel Clark,\u00a0Jake Holden, Daneal Khurl, James\u00a0Peppercorn, Felix Shannon, George\u00a0Squires and Forrest Whitcomb who\u00a0worked so hard to create unique and\u00a0meaningful art over the past two years in\u00a0their IB course.
