ONU Tongan Scholarship
The ONU Tongan Scholarship is named to recognise and celebrate the long standing relationship between the College and the Kingdom of Tonga. Much of the funds for this Scholarship continue to be provided by the ONU and Old Boys generally and it is for this reason that it is designated a means tested ONU Scholarship.
The relationship with Tonga goes right back to the first days of Newington College in 1863. The first Headmaster, Rev James Egan Moulton was appointed to Newington as an interim measure, to give him time to marry before taking up a Wesleyan Missionary role in Tonga.
In 1866, he became the Founding Headmaster of what is now our brother school, Tupou College. In 2013, some 80 staff and students visited Newington to celebrate our Sesquicentenary and in 2016, we reciprocated with 105 staff and students and 25 Old Boys and partners travelling to Tonga for Tupou College’s Celebrations.

Since 1895
The first student from Tonga, Moulton Finau, arrived at Newington in 1895 and many have followed him since. Most significantly was the future King of Tonga, His Late Majesty King Tupou IV, who attended Newington in the 1930’s.
Over the past decade, Newington has made great strides in building the relationship with Tupou College and Tonga generally and the means tested ONU Tongan Scholarship is but one manifestation of this support.
ONU Tongan Scholarships are awarded to young men who are residents of Tonga and either attend Tupou College or are sons or grandsons of Old Boys of Newington and who are eligible to enter Year 10 as boarders (must turn 16 during Year 10). Scholarships are awarded to applicants that possess a reasonable fluency in English, sound academic ability, character and leadership attributes, and strength in sporting and/or cultural activities (music, drama, art).
It is noted that donations to the ONU Tongan Scholarships are not tax deductible.
