{"id":74,"date":"2018-10-24T03:39:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T03:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/insites.newington.nsw.edu.au\/newingtoncollegestrategicplan\/?page_id=74"},"modified":"2019-03-24T23:53:32","modified_gmt":"2019-03-24T23:53:32","slug":"well-being-character-service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/insites.newington.nsw.edu.au\/newingtoncollegestrategicplan\/well-being-character-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Well-being, Character and Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Priority 2.1 A Just and Caring Community<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>a)<\/strong> Continue to develop a culture that is inclusive and reinforces the values of care, intercultural and international understanding, consideration and respect for others.<br \/>\n<strong>b)<\/strong> Foster a holistic approach to the wellbeing of each boy encompassing the spiritual, academic, pastoral and co-curricular areas of his development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.1.1<\/strong> Openly value the contributions of all boys and celebrate the diversity of their achievements and backgrounds.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.2<\/strong> Recognise the challenges of 21st Century family life.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.3<\/strong> Expand Service Learning opportunities with a strong emphasis on \u201chands on\u201d approaches to community service and awareness raising.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.4<\/strong> Explore the concept of having a specialist unit for intellectually challenged boys.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.5<\/strong> Be an active member of the International Boys\u2019 Schools Coalition (IBSC) seeking research opportunities, collaboration, benchmarking, sharing.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.6<\/strong> Foster and strengthen the House (Years 8\u201312) and Year Systems (Years K\u20137).<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.7<\/strong> Refine and enhance the transitioning process from Year 6 into the Secondary School.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.8<\/strong> Continue to develop community feedback on well-being structures, policies and programs.<br \/>\n<strong>2.1.9<\/strong> Continue to develop external well-being networks including links to specialist providers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Priority 2.2 Policies and Programs to promote well-being and develop good character<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>c)<\/strong> Enhance each boy\u2019s sense of self esteem, self-worth, independence and interdependence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.1<\/strong> Encourage each boy\u2019s identification with at least one significant staff member through his Secondary years.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.2<\/strong> Encourage emotional intelligence and resilience in all boys through all College programs.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.3<\/strong> Continue to use a range of behavioural management and motivational strategies that suit the needs of the individual boy.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.4<\/strong> Provide effective follow up on school reports with regard to effort and engagement both in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>d)<\/strong> Phase in the best elements of a positive psychology approach to the Years 5\u201312 well-being programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.5<\/strong> Promote programs to raise awareness of mental health issues.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.6<\/strong> Train Year 8 Mentors in Term 4 to prepare for the implementation of positive psychology programs into Year 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>e)<\/strong> Continue best practice anti-bullying\u00a0strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.7<\/strong> Provide programs that address unacceptable stereotyping and discrimination e.g. sexuality, racism, disabilities, gender.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.8<\/strong> Continue to develop age appropriate anti-bullying programs. This is to include regular boy feedback surveys on bullying in any format and follow-up as appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>f)<\/strong> Promote effective professional development for staff on pastoral issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.9<\/strong> Provide an ongoing training program, including induction for Mentors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>g)<\/strong> Promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.10<\/strong> Encourage a balanced lifestyle with good time management skills.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.11<\/strong> Offer relaxation, stress and time management programs.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.12<\/strong> Continue to develop a comprehensive physical fitness program for all boys.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.13<\/strong> Provide opportunities and develop strategies for boys to learn about ways to promote positive mental health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>h)<\/strong> Provide all the boys with timely affirmation and intervention with regard to effort and engagement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.14<\/strong> Continue to develop age appropriate well-being programs.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.15<\/strong> Research effective indicators of effort and engagement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I)<\/strong> Engage in strong partnership with parents on issues around character development, well-being programs and service initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.16<\/strong> Provide specialist guest speakers on all aspects of well-being, character and service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>J)<\/strong> Improve communication networks and channels for boys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.17<\/strong> Explore the concept of a \u201cone stop shop\u201d tertiary model Student Centre for boys and parents to access all forms of information, communication and required academic data.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.18<\/strong> Conduct regular boy surveys on well-being issues and the Mentor program to constantly improve our well-being programs.<br \/>\n<strong>2.2.19<\/strong> Conduct annual exit surveys for Years 6\u201312.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>K)<\/strong> Develop global citizens who have a strong ethical compass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.20<\/strong> Explore well-being in relation to good digital citizenship goals and promote programs to raise awareness of social media issues and healthy use of technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>l)<\/strong> Promote leadership training and opportunities to serve (refer section 4.3)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.21<\/strong> Seek to improve leadership training and preparation for leadership opportunities across Years 5\u201312.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>m)<\/strong> Provide quality school residential care for boarders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2.22<\/strong> Require all boarding staff to be up to date with residential care qualifications and training.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Newington College.
