Newington’s Service Learning Program<\/h2>\n

Introduced at Newington in 2009, the College\u2019s Service Learning program encourages students to consider their roles and responsibilities within the broader community. The program aims to expand our boys\u2019 awareness of the inequalities that exist in our local, national and international communities. We provide them with practical hands on opportunities to work alongside charity workers and community volunteers.<\/p>\n

We expect all boys to learn when to serve, step up, and speak out for others.<\/p>\n

How we care<\/h2>\n

Our Service Learning program works alongside our Well-being programs to provide opportunities for boys to pass on a good deed and experience the value of putting others first.<\/p>\n

Our Approach<\/h2>\n

The Service Learning program is governed by five fundamental principles which include:<\/p>\n

  1. Leadership and Service:\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>Service should be the base criteria for student leadership in the College community<\/li>\n
  2. Community Service in action:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/i>Service Learning should be considered more than just fundraising but rather a willingness to contribute positively to society<\/li>\n
  3. Developing relationships over time:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/i>There should be an emphasis on re-uniting existing community relationships and building new and long-lasting relationships<\/li>\n
  4. Consistent with the founding traditions of the College:<\/strong>\u00a0The Service Learning program should ensure a strong link with the Uniting Church ethos while also acknowledging the College\u2019s historical links<\/li>\n
  5. Educational basis:<\/strong>\u00a0All Service Learning activities should involve critical thinking skills and links to the classroom.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Social Justice <\/h2>\n

    Awareness and action initiatives that make a real difference in the community.<\/p>\n

    Actions speak louder than words<\/h2>\n

    Personal experience is an indispensable feature of Newington\u2019s Social Justice education. Boys are encouraged to \u2018do\u2019 rather than \u2018talk\u2019 or simply raise funds.<\/p>\n

    Learning to lead<\/h2>\n
