Meet the Mentor

Getting to know the mentors is a vital part of the Year 7 Transition program. Meet the Year 7 Mentors for 2018 below. You will also meet your son’s mentors at the Parent Information Evening on Monday 20 November (details will be sent to you shortly).

Head of Year 7 - Ms Colleen Scalone

Subjects that you teach: Science and senior Biology at HSC and IB level.

Co-curricular: Winter Football.

Hobbies: Basketball, cooking, reading (cook books!), movies, Rugby (all codes), travelling.

Something people may not know about you:  I love to cook and love fast cars/motorbikes but my son wouldn’t let me buy one!

Assistant Head of Year 7 - Ms Jess Christian

Subjects/Levels you teach: English and History.

Co-curricular: Rowing Coach.

Hobbies: Travelling and reading.

Mr James Battaglia

Subjects: Year 7-10 Science and Senior Chemistry, both HSC and IB.

Co-curricular Activities: Rugby, Da Vinci Decathlon and Science Club.

Hobbies: Cooking, travelling and playing touch football.

Something most people wouldn’t know about me: I am a tragic Chicago Bears and Gold Coast Titans fan.

Mr Craig Fitzsimmons

Subjects: Science and Senior Physics. 2018 will be my sixth year as a Year 7 Mentor.

Co-curricular Activities: Tennis.

Hobbies: Travel, trains, driving, reading, walking, conversation (and lively debate!), swimming and just trying to stay fit.

Ms Genevieve Hayes

Subjects: Mathematics for all levels from Year 7-12, including HSC and IB.

Co-curricular Activities: I am the manager and coach of Swim Club.

Hobbies: I love to travel. I spent last year working at the Australian International School in Malaysia and spent my holidays travelling around most of South East Asia.

Something most people wouldn’t know about you: I flew a plane before I drove a car.

Mr Mark Scott

Subjects: I teach Year 7-12 HSC and IB Music and have been Head of the Music Department since 2004.

Co-curricular Activities: Choir and Symphony Orchestra.

Hobbies: Reading (real books), music (I truly believe it’s the most amazing thing in the world) and supporting the Roosters in the NRL.

Something most people wouldn’t know about you: I got kicked out of the school choir in Year 5.

Dr Billy Stevenson

Subjects: Year 7-12 English.

Co-curricular Activities: Debating.

Hobbies: I love cinema, television, reading and NRL.

Something most people wouldn’t know about you: I have Goldie Hawn’s autograph!

Mr Jeremy Green

Subjects that you teach: English and History.

Co-curricular: Winter: Football, Summer: Basketball.

Hobbies: Surfing, travelling, and reading (mostly Fantasy books!).

Something people may not know about you: My favourite country to travel to is Japan. The history, culture, skiing and food are all fantastic!

Ms Anne Moylan

Subjects: Year 7-10 Science, Year 11 and 12 HSC Earth and Environmental Science.

Co-curricular Activities: Cadets.

Hobbies: Travelling, seeing friends and family, going to the beach, going to the AFL (to support the Swans).

Something most people wouldn’t know about you: I am weirdly obsessed with Harry Potter. I have read each of the books and seen each of the movies  too many times to count.

Mr Tom Cosgrove

Subjects: Year 7-10 Science, Senior Biology and Physics, both HSC and IB.

Co-Curricular Activities: Basketball.

Hobbies: Travelling, reading, most water based activities, snowboarding, and big fan of the New York Knicks and the New Orleans Saints.

Something most people wouldn’t know about you: As a child of country vets, I grew up with kangaroos, a wallaby, an echidna, a sheep, a ram, a myriad of birds and reptiles, and dozens of dogs and cats and their offspring.

Mr Doug Vass

Subjects/Level you teach:  Mathematics all levels 7-12, including HSC and IB. I am the Head of the Mathematics Department at Newington College.

Co-curricular activities:  Water Polo in the summer season.

Hobbies: Gardening and Technology. Just getting outdoors in general makes me smile.

Something most people wouldn’t know about you:  You can take the boy out of the bush but not the bush out of the boy. I grew up out in western NSW and I love how country and folk music remind me of the simpler things in life.
