Service Learning at Newington

Newington's Service Learning Program

We expect all boys to learn when to serve, step up, and speak out for others.

Introduced at Newington in 2009, the College’s Service Learning program encourages students to consider their roles and responsibilities within the broader community. The program aims to expand our boys’ awareness of the inequalities that exist in our local, national and international communities. We provide them with practical hands on opportunities to work alongside charity workers and community volunteers.

How we care

Our Service Learning program works alongside our Well-being programs to provide opportunities for boys to pass on a good deed and experience the value of putting others first.

Our Approach

The Service Learning program is governed by five fundamental principles which include:

  1. Leadership and Service: Service should be the base criteria for student leadership in the College community
  2. Community Service in action: Service Learning should be considered more than just fundraising but rather a willingness to contribute positively to society
  3. Developing relationships over time: There should be an emphasis on re-uniting existing community relationships and building new and long-lasting relationships
  4. Consistent with the founding traditions of the College: The Service Learning program should ensure a strong link with the Uniting Church ethos while also acknowledging the College’s historical links
  5. Educational basis: All Service Learning activities should involve critical thinking skills and links to the classroom.

Social Justice

Awareness and action initiatives that make a real difference in the community.

Actions speak louder than words

Personal experience is an indispensable feature of Newington’s Social Justice education. Boys are encouraged to ‘do’ rather than ‘talk’ or simply raise funds.

Learning to lead

Over time and with many and varied opportunities to serve, the boys will discover a personal style of leadership.
