Main Topics

PRELIMINARY COURSE (Y11)

Module: Texts, Culture and Value – Students explore the way in which aspects and concerns in texts from the past have been carried forward, borrowed from and/or appropriate into another context. The module develops students’ understanding of how and why cultural values are maintained and changed. Students examine a key text from the past and its manifestations in other contexts and media. Students develop a range of imaginative, interpretive and analytical compositions.

Related Project – This project provides opportunities for students to develop skills in independent investigation and critical and creative thinking. They develop an understanding of research methodologies suitable to support a range of interpretive, analytical and imaginative projects. Students select a key text and examine and evaluate manifestation of their selected text in other contexts and media, while considering how and whether the values embedded in one text parallel, challenge or offer alternatives in the other.

HSC ENGLISH EXTENSION 1 (Y12)
The Year 12 Extension 1 course consists of both the Common Module: Literary Worlds and an Elective Module. Students explore, investigate, experiment with and evaluate the ways texts represent and illuminate the complexity of individual and collective lives in literary worlds. Students evaluate how ideas and ways of thinking are shaped by personal, social, historical and cultural contexts. They extend their understanding of the ways that texts contribute to their awareness of the diversity of ideas, attitudes and perspectives evident in texts. Students experiment with critical and creative compositions that explore how language features and forms are crafted to express complex ideas and emotions, motivations, attitudes, experiences and values. These compositions may be realised in various forms, modes and media.

Assessment - HSC Extension 1 only

There are both internal and external assessments to support students in Stage 6 English.

Internal assessments encourage students to develop their understanding and appreciation of language and literature in a range of contexts. In Extension, students are particularly developed in the areas of extended analytical and creative compositions, wide reading and extended oral presentation.

The final HSC examination will be in one paper as follows:

  • Section 1 focuses on the Common Module: Literary Worldsrequiring students to write in imaginative and/or reflective and/or analytical forms.
  • Paper 2 focuses on the Elective Module: Worlds of Upheaval, requiring students to write a sustained piece of work evaluating their understanding of prescribed texts and at least one related text in light of an unseen question.
