Geography
Course Description
Preliminary Course [Board Developed] 2 units HSC Course [Board Developed] 2 units
The geography course is a broad based academic subject which explores a diverse range of contemporary geographical issues and how both physical and human processes shape the world. There is a strong focus on contemporary research and analytical skills where students think about issues from a range of different perspectives, evaluate management strategies and practice active citizenship.
Communication and critical thinking skills are developed which provide the students a strong academic foundation for university and beyond. Employers and universities see geography as a robust academic subject rich in skills, knowledge and understanding. As a subject linking the arts and the sciences it is highly flexible in terms of what you can combine it with at school and at university.
The Senior course enables students to understand and appreciate different viewpoints about the world they live in via three in depth and relevant units in both Year 11 and 12. Each unit in the Senior Course is dynamic and requires a current understanding of the global issues happening in the world of today.
The Geographical Investigation also takes place within the Preliminary course. It is a written and orally presented research assignment on a geographical inquiry of the student’s choosing. Students learn research methodologies to collect and analyse data on a relevant geographical issue. They are taught how to use GIS software to analyse and map their findings.
Fieldwork is an essential ingredient of geography because it provides a ‘real-world’ opportunity for students to develop and extend their geographical thinking; it adds value to classroom experiences. Students will undertake a range of excursions to places such as Ku-ring-gai National Park, Barangaroo, the Hunter Valley and the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland residential fieldtrip in Term 4 of Year 11.
