Course Description

HSC Course [Board Developed] 1 unit


The History Extension course is focussed on Historiography (the study of how history is recorded). It has three main components of study: 

  • Constructing History: A survey of the changes in the construction and approaches to History over time, through the exploration of a variety of historians, movements and contemporary examples. 
  • A Case Study allowing for the close examination of historians’ work, we explore the historiography Winston Churchill. 
  • The History Project, where students explore a historiographical issue of their own choosing, develop it in consultation with staff and present it as a research paper. 

Particular Course Requirements: Entry at the discretion of the HOD. Substantial performance in the preliminary 2 unit course necessary. 

Main Topics Covered:

HSC COURSE (Y12)
The two Case Studies offered reflect Ancient and Modern focuses but can be attempted regardless of the 2 unit option attempted – eg. a student may choose the Ancient Case Study without attempting Ancient History at 2 unit.

The two Case Studies are:

  • Napoleon: Revolutionary or Tyrant
  • Tacitus: A study of the construction of his histories of Imperial Rome.

Assessment – HSC course only

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING INTERNAL ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING
One two-hour written examination in two parts. Covering Constructing History and the Case Study 50 Internal assessment is based on trial examination 20% and the history project 80%. 50
