What is the Mind?
Tuesday 23 February, 7pm with Dr Stephen Law
What is the Mind?
What is the relationship between my inner world of conscious experiences and physical reality? Am I my brain, as Professor Susan Greenfield claims? Or are there reasons to doubt that? We will look at arguments for and against the mind being the brain (or at least physical), including Descartes’ famous arguments for substance dualism.
Dr Stephen Law began his career as a postman before discovering philosophy and entering University as a mature student. He was a postgraduate and researcher at the University of Oxford, before becoming a Lecturer, then Reader and Head of the Department of Philosophy at Heythrop College in the University of London. Stephen has written many popular introductions to philosophy including The Complete Philosophy Files and The Philosophy Gym. He is editor of the Royal Institute of Philosophy’s journal Think, which introduces philosophy to a wide audience.
