Industrial Technology – Timber

A NESA Elective

Industrial Technology - Timber

What is this course?

This course is a woodworking course that develops students’ knowledge and understanding of timber and its related processes and technologies. Students develop knowledge and skills relating to the selection, use and application of timber, tools, machines and processes through the planning and production of quality practical projects.

The fundamental aim of the course is to instil and teach perseverance, resilience, concentration, self-reliance and problem-solving through practical, timber-based projects. Rich and meaningful learning occurs when students have the opportunity to practically apply their knowledge, utilising their hands to discover and further explore what they know.

Timber related skills that will be developed include the ability to select and use a range of timbers for individual projects. Students will learn to competently and safely use a range of hand tools, power tools and machines to construct quality timber projects. They will also learn to produce drawings and written portfolio documents to assist in the communication of ideas and to document the development of projects.

Core modules in Year 9 develop knowledge and skills in the use of materials, tools and techniques related to timber. These are enhanced and further developed through the study of specialist modules in Cabinetwork and Wood Machining in Year 10.

Why study this course?

Students who enjoy practical work and learning new skills will be well suited to this course. Lessons are spent in workshops with students primarily on their feet making projects with their hands. This course is designed for students who can work both independently and collaboratively on projects.

Practical making is beneficial for both the mind and the body. It can also help complement the academic day providing a different type of learning environment. Students who study this course can build confidence and their ability to solve problems and effectively manage their time.
