Design and Technology (Year 10, 2023)

A Group A Elective

Course Description

Design and Technology develops innovative and creative thought through the planning and production of design projects related to real-life needs and situations.

Students learn to identify, analyse and respond to needs through research and experimentation leading to the construction of quality design projects. They learn to access, manage and safely use a range of materials, tools and techniques to aid in the development of design projects and to critically evaluate their own work and the work of others.

There will be a minimum of six design projects throughout the course, where students will design and construct projects using plastics, metal, wood, composites and electronic components. The projects will range from furniture to industrial design.

Projects

  • Ecolamp – environmentally friendly LED light
  • Rethink/Recycle – a project using industrial materials in a domestic form
  • Packaging design
  • Furnishing
  • Bendy Ply Project

Course Emphasis

The major emphasis is on students actively planning, designing, and constructing quality practical projects using the latest technology, including the laser cutter and CNC milling machine. They will also learn to produce drawings and written reports to develop and communicate ideas and information relating to projects. Students will use computer design software such as Autodesk Fusion 360 and Adobe Illustrator for drawing and design development.
